On the day of the seminar, Sun Yangyang, a doctoral student at Kyoto University, gave a presentation entitled “Misreading and Misinterpretation in the Use of Linguistic Materials,” with approximately eight participants in attendance.
Mr. Sun focused on the Chinese rhyme dictionary Xiesheng pinzi jian and the Japanese text Nihon fudoki, discussing misreadings and misunderstandings of Early Modern Wu language texts. He began by introducing the Xiesheng pinzi jian as a source that reflects Wu phonology. Mr. Sun then examined how this work was distributed in provinces such as Fujian and Jiangxi, based on records from European missionaries and scholars, noting that it was used as both a “book of proper pronunciation” and a “dictionary of Nanjing Mandarin.” He also presented his own views on how the work had been misread. Regarding the Nihon Fudoki, he analyzed the misreading of this work by referencing the records of the Japanese scholar Arai Hakuseki.
During the open discussion, participants first explored what kind of text the Nihon fudoki specifically is. The origins of the dialects recorded in the Xiesheng pinzi jian were also discussed. A broader discussion unfolded on Mandarin and dialects in China, particularly focusing on the standards of Mandarin and the characteristics of the Jiangsu-Zhejiang (Jiangzhe) dialects/languages.
