Shi Lishan (Shanghai Normal University): “Academic exchanges between Japan and China in the early modern age: Hu Shi, Iriya Yoshitaka, and documents pertaining to international Zen Buddhism”
Summary: After introducing Hu Shi and Iriya Yoshitaka, Shi then discussed a number of letters exchanged between the two. It was possible to glean from these letters some insight into the scholastic attitude of Hu Shi, especially regarding the importance he placed on Sinitic Zen Buddhist documents then held outside of China. Shi emphasized the need to systematically organize such documents.
Discussion: We discussed the current state of research into Sinitic Zen Buddhist documents then held outside of China. For example, we spoke about the Research Center for Sinitic Document Held Abroad (Yuwai hanji yanjiusuo) at Nanjing University, as well as similar research being conducted by Dr. Wang Xiaoping.

About the Platform for Rising Scholars
The Platform for Rising Scholars was started in 2016 as part of the Creation of a Next-Generation Hub for East Asian Classical Studies: Accelerating Research and Education through International Collaboration (headed by Saitō Mareshi), with hopes of providing young researchers with an opportunity to share their research and communicate with one another. This platform encourages promising researchers, including graduate students, post-doctors, assistant professors, and lecturers, to present their research outside of their home institutions. Commentators are likewise selected from among young researchers for the purpose of promoting inter-institutional communication.
